Watercolour | 7.5 x 9.5 inches “The well known view of Bedruthan is the view looking down onto the beach and the steps. But I liked the view from the tideline, looking up, seeing the rock formations against the sky. It made for an interesting subject.”

Watercolour | 7 x 10 inches “I enjoyed painting the cluster of houses in the sun. I kept the hillside and water dark so it would help the light parts of the painting to stand out. There were so many soft edges and subtle shifts of colour, it was great to paint.”

Watercolour | 7.25 x 9.25 inches “I was mindful to keep the white of the paper for the brightest lights. Gouache never has the same luminosity as the untouched paper. I kept the colours rich so the light parts in the painting would really stand out.”

Watercolour | 4.5 x 7.25 inches “Newquay is a great place to paint. So much activity, so many boats and subjects. There were such great skies on this day, sunshine and showers and it was bitterly cold. As it was November the only boats left in the harbour were the fishing boats.”

Watercolour | 6 x 9.25 inches “This was a great subject for a watercolour; the light boat sitting against the dark cliff and the dark boat sitting against the light water. This was at the end of the first lockdown, it felt unusual to see Port Isaac so quiet at that time of year.” 

Watercolour | 4.5 x 7.25 inches “I really liked the cliff shadow on the sea. It was hard to resist the temptation to put the shadow in straight away. It was important to put it in last and use it also as a unifying wash over the cliff too.”
