St Benet’s Abbey is a lovely structure to paint, it stands tall above the reeds and the waterways, this profile enhances its dominance in the landscape, but the earthy tones I hope help to keep it grounded in its surroundings, I love it.

This small bull study is an effort to bring cattle into the foreground of my work. Many people will remember subtle suggestions of cattle in the distance in my earlier work, I have enjoyed looking closer at cattle, sheep and horses and including them as a focal point in my recent pieces.

Staithes offers an artist so much visual material, it was nice to just capture some of the boats at rest in the beck. Sometimes a light effect has so much impact on you that it needs painting a few times to get it out of your system. Sometimes it doesn’t leave your system, it stays

David Curtis, ROI, RSMA introduced me to the concept of painting ‘into the light’, and the effect of light and dark to such a contrast, I love this photo and wanted to capture its extreme contrast. the red sail helps to add interest to the water.

Another view of Staithe road, this time in winter, I love the natural hessian canvas, it adds warmth to an otherwise chilly scene.

The natural tones and detail to this painting make it very realistic, this wasn’t my intention, but I’m glad how its turned out, take out the bird and its a lifeless scene…. Painted 2013.

I wasn’t sure if a portrait orientation would work with this painting, but I really like the elongated light being reflected down through the water, I like its busy presentation, despite it being fairly monotone. Painted 2013.
