Testament that Norfolk has great skies, the photograph to this painting is stunning, its sometimes a shame to tweak the colours of the sky so that they sit in a particular palette, or are kinder on the eye, sometimes its nice to paint exactly what is there, a dramatic sky and all that it stands for. The day hasn’t quite woken up and you are not sure if the sun will make an appearance in this painting, it remains very chilly and still. Painted 2014.

Not sure that’s its name, but I imagine it would like being called Joe. I love the rough and rustic brushwork in this study, thick winter coat and grass, lovely. Painted 2014.

I love seeing cattle grazing on the marshes, they break up the very flat and linear landscape. The composition of this piece with the meandering water and height of the mill reaching into the sky helps to break up the subject matter and takes your eye on a journey into the painting. Painted 2014.

This is the second painting and you can see the intensity of the sun’s reflection on the water is slightly more intense, burning the mist away and revealing a bit more detail to the surroundings. The presence of a distant figure and a boat signals the start of the day. Painted 2014.

I enjoyed adding detail to the foreground and emphasising the dark water beneath the reed bed on the left, the dark tones really help to ground you into the bank and you are held there, looking out towards the dimly lit distance. Painted 2013.

It wasn’t until I saw this painting presented inside a mount that I realised just how varied the colours are in this painting. I love the low flying geese over the frosty reeds and the distant snow clad rooftops. Painted 2014.

The contrast of the cool shades in this painting compared to the other painting of Duck’s Crossing offers an opportunity to see how often a location changes in its light and tone. Painted 2013.

this small staithe still offers a great deal to look at, from the wild fowl to the changing water levels and colours. There is always something to look at here. Painted 2013.
