Under The Old Oak

Pastel | 6.5 x 5.25 inches

“When I reference my work from photographs, I always work from material I’ve taken. However, when my parents came back from Norfolk and showed me this scene, I really felt that I should paint it!

I started an oil of this subject but had a niggling feeling that I shouldn’t really be working from a photograph that I didn’t take! However, as soon as I started using my pastels I liked the colours and forms in the decaying, dewy grass which reminded me of the foreground in Sir John Arnesby Brown’s painting ‘The Coming Day’.”
