Rocky Cove

Oil on board |  7 x 12 inches

I painted this alongside Barbara Hawkins. She had forgotten to pack her watercolour pad. I only had my oils, so I loaned her some brushes and canvases and we shared my palette. We sat on the springy grass in the warm afternoon sun and painted the beautiful little cove. I was struggling to decide what part to paint: the steps or the cove. After a couple of sketches I decided to take both parts on. I added the figure* and the gulls to give life to composition.

It was interesting to see the difference in mine and Barbara’s paintings even though we used the same colour palette, canvas make and brushes, both paintings were very different. * the figure is my dad, and he hasn’t got a beer belly, it is the wind blowing his t-shirt!
