‘This was the first painting undertaken on the west coast of Scotland. Looking at this now, I can see how I was starting to adjust to how different the colour palette is in this part of the UK. By the end of the trip I had certainly worked out the correct colours. The mountains were the richest bluey-purple and I found that the colours were entirely affected by what the sky was doing. Thus, as fast as the clouds moved across the sky, the colours of the mountains changed. It was a real challenge.’
