I like using gouache on its own or with watercolour, it dries quickly and it allows itself to be pushed and pulled a bit like oils. Sometimes I find the washes a bit flat, so it’s a bit of a balance to get the density of pigment and also the transparency as well; sometimes it works. When I do a bad watercolour I always remind myself ‘you do four good ones out of ten if you’re lucky’.
