“It was a lovely afternoon in late August. Big scudding clouds that cast dark shadows that tracked across the land. Warm sunshine with the scent of soil on a cool breeze. The crows swirled from cultivated fields to dark-leafed oak trees. Halfway through this painting I had a feeling it could be one the best things I have ever done in pastel. It was a joyous thing taking a simple subject and, with a bit of light and shadow, it could be transformed into something beautiful.”
